A series horrific videos has surfaced on multiple social media outlets showing the desecration and mutilation of the body of the late Governor of West Darfur, Khamis Abdel Allah Abaker. Mr. Abaker was killed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Elgeneina, Sudan, on June 14, 2022. He was in the custody of RSF commander of West Darfur Abdelrahman Juma Barak Allah (ref. 1).

There are four videos (exhibits) in total, two that have been presented as evidence in the case of the late governor’s killing. Two of the videos were recently released and below is a breakdown of the content of each.

• Exhibit A: This video shows Governor Khamis being abducted and detained by RSF forces a few hours after his TV interview. He is seen being escorted out of a pickup truck by RSF Commander Abdelrahman Juma Barak Allah and into a small office. As he is about to enter the office, he is attacked with a chair and the footage cuts off (ref. #).

• Exhibit B: This video shows the bodies of Governor Khamis and his brother lying on the ground after they have been killed. Both men have deep wounds on their faces. People can be heard in the background talking about the deaths, using foul language. One person says, “See, you’re dead now.”

• Exhibit C: This video was recently released and is believed to have been recorded on the day of Governor Khamis’ assassination. It shows his body being run over and over by a pickup truck. Men and women are seen surrounding the body, watching this horrific act with jubilant chants; they crowd are believed to be relative of the RSF and Janjaweed members carrying out this horrific crimes, or belongs ti the same kin of the RSF and Janjaweed soldiers .

• Exhibit D: This video was also recently released and is also believed to have been recorded on the day of Governor Khamis’ assassination. It is very graphic and shows his body being stoned to death. Someone then comes and grabs his legs and starts dragging his body away, which prompts the crowd to shout, “Leave it there!” The late governor’s knees appear to have been dislocated and his body is covered in deep cuts and injuries. His upper body has been stripped of clothing in an act of complete desecration.

The videos are all very disturbing and graphic. They provide strong evidence of the brutal and inhumane way in which Governor Khamis was killed. All of the videos described in this piece were seemed to be recorded by the RSF members.

إنتشرت في الآونة الأخيرة على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي سلسلة من مقاطع الفيديو المروعة تظهر تمثيل بشع بجثمان والي ولاية غرب دارفور الراحل خميس عبد الله أبكر. قُتل الوالي خميس على يد قوات الدعم السريع في الجنينة بالسودان، في 14 يونيو 2023. وقبيل مقتله كان في معتقل الدعم السريع في عُهدة قائد قوات الدعم السريع بغرب دارفور عبد الرحمن جمعة بارك الله (المرجع 1).

هناك أربعة فيديوهات (معروضات) تم تقديم اثنان كدليل في قضية مقتل الوالي خميس. وقد تم نشر اثنين من مقاطع الفيديو مؤخرًا، والتي سوف تضاف الى مجموعة الادلة الموجودة مسبقاً.

• المستند (أ): يُظهر هذا الفيديو احتجاز قوات الدعم السريع للوالي خميس بعد ساعات قليلة من مقابلته التلفزيونية. وشوهد في الفيديو وهو يخرج من مركبة ويرافقه قائد قوات الدعم السريع بغرب دارفور عبد الرحمن جمعة بارك الله منها الى مكتب صغير. وبينما كان على وشك دخول المكتب، تمت مهاجمته بكرسي من قبل افراد الدعم السريع وقوات الجنجويد امام قائدهم وبعدها تم قطع الفيديو (المرجع #).

• المستند (ب): يُظهر هذا الفيديو جثمانان، احدهما الوالي خميس وثاني لشقيقه وكلاهما ملقاة على الأرض ويتخلل وجه الوالي خميس كدمات وجروح عميقة. ويمكن سماع الناس في الخلفية يتحدثون عن قتل الوالي باستخدام لغة بذيئة.

• المستند ج: تم تداول هذا الفيديو مؤخرًا ويُعتقد أنه تم تسجيله في يوم اغتيال الوالي خميس. يُظهر الفيديو جثمان الوالي المقتول و يتم دهسه مرارًا وتكرارًا بواسطة شاحنة صغيرة. ويظهر رجال ونساء يحيطون بالجثمان، ويشاهدون هذا العمل المروع مع الهتافات المبتهجة؛ ويعتقد أن هؤلاء الحشد من أقارب جنود قوات الدعم السريع وأعضاء الجنجويد المشاركين في عملية القتل. الصادم في الامر ان هذه الجريمة البشعة كانت تتم وسط مشاهد فرح واحتفاء من الحشد.

• المستند د: تم تداول هذا الفيديو مؤخرًا أيضًا ويُعتقد أيضًا أنه تم تسجيله في يوم اغتيال الوالي خميس. يعد هذا الفيديو هو الافظع، حيث يظهر عملية رجم بشعة تتم لجثمان الوالي خميس عبدالله أبكر باستخدام حجارة وصخور كبير مما ادي الى تشويه الجثمان وظهور المزيد من الكدمات عليه والجروح العميقة. ثم بعد ذلك بلحظات يأتي شخص ما ويمسك بساقيه ويبدأ بسحب جسده بعيدًا، مما دفع الحشد إلى الصراخ: “اتركه هناك!” ويوضح من خلال الفيديو أن ركبتي الحاكم الراحل قد تعرضتا للكسر الارجل للالتواء في عمليات تشويه وتمثيل. كل ذلك وقد تم تجريد الجزء العلوي من جسده من الملابس في عمل من أعمال التدنيس الكامل.

مقاطع الفيديو البشعة السابقة ذكرها تمثل دليلاً قوياً على الطريقة الوحشية واللاإنسانية التي قُتل بها الوالي خميس وايضاً الإصرار من قبل أفراد الدعم السريع والمنظومة على الثوثيق لجرائمها بانفسهم ونشرها للمواد لبث الرعب والارهاب في كل مكان.

*The Union urges the UK government to increase the Humanitarian assistance to East Chad and Darfur through Portsudan and also via Douala Port in Cameroon

* UK government should work closely with their partners to holding the leaders of RSF accountable for all the crimes against humanity and war crimes they have committed against the civilians of Darfur, including the ongoing assassinations of locals in Nyala

The Darfur Union in the UK has welcomed the statement by UK Minister of Development and Africa, Andrew Mitchell, regarding the atrocities in Sudan and Darfur.

In his statement, Mitchell condemned the “reports of deliberate targeting and mass displacement of the Masalit community in Darfur” as “particularly shocking and abhorrent”. He also mentioned that “the UK is working hard to end the fighting in Sudan, including bolstering our capacity to monitor the atrocities that are taking place”. He continued to state “This evidence will be shared with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Criminal Court to ensure the evidence is preserved and used to hold people to account” (ref. 1). This is a significant step in terms of using clear language and strong statement from Western Governments officials regarding the ongoing in Sudan in general, and in Darfur in particular.

It is worth mentioning that the DARFUR Union in the UK has received correspondence from Minister for Development and Africa, Andrew Mitchell on 3rd August 2023 (ref. 2), regarding the UK’s commitment to humanitarian pledges to Darfur and Sudan, IDPs and refugees in Chad and other neighboring countries, as well as the pursuit of all diplomatic avenues to bring the war to an end. In his correspondence, Minister Mitchell reiterated the UK’s commitment to providing £21.7 million in humanitarian assistance to Darfur and Sudan as of May 24th 2023. He also highlighted an earlier announcement of £5 million to help meet the urgent needs of refugees and returnees in South Sudan and Chad”. This correspondence from the minister was received on the back of several updates from the union shared with the minister and his team since June 2023.

رحب اتحاد دارفور بالمملكة المتحدة بالبيان الذي أدلى به وزير التنمية وأفريقيا البريطاني، أندرو ميتشل، بشأن الفظائع في السودان ودارفور.

وأدان ميتشل في بيانه “الاستهداف المتعمد والتهجير الجماعي الذي تم للمساليت والمجموعات الافريقية الاخرى في دارفور” ووصفها بأنها “صادمة ومقيتة”. وذكر أيضًا أن “المملكة المتحدة تعمل جاهدة لإنهاء القتال في السودان، بما في ذلك تعزيز قدرتنا على مراقبة الفظائع التي تحدث”. وتابع قائلاً: “ستتم مشاركة هذه الأدلة التي في ايدينا مع مكتب المفوض السامي لحقوق الإنسان التابع للأمم المتحدة والمحكمة الجنائية الدولية لضمان الحفاظ على الأدلة واستخدامها لمحاسبة الأشخاص المتورطين” (المرجع 1). تعد هذه خطوة على انها هامة للغاية من حيث استخدام لغة واضحة وتصريحات قوية من مسؤول في حكومة لدولة من دول الاعضاء الدائمين في الامم المتحدة فيما يتعلق بالأحداث الجارية في السودان بشكل عام، وفي دارفور بشكل خاص.

* Darfur Union in the UK has issued a plea to the international community to intervene to rescue the dire situation in Nyala, South Darfur; ca. 50 thousands persons fled the city over the course of 5 days*

*The city is on the brink of a humanitarian calamity, with food shortages, a lack of access to healthcare, and a surge in violence*

*The scenario of Elgeneina from War Crimes point of view is not that far away from what is taking place in Nyala; RSF are assassinating civilians at their own homes in certain neighbourhoods within Nyala*

Eyewitnesses say that the situation inside the city of Nyala is the worst it has been since the conflict began in 2003. The city is home to over one million people (ref. 0), thousands of whom have been displaced from their homes by the violence, which started after the trigger of war in Khartoum on 15th April 2023 between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Arm Forces (SAF). Since then fighting has spread to other cities. Nyala is the latest city in Darfur to have suffer the calamity of the shelling between the two parties, with civilians at the receiving end of this heavy exchange. Over the last few weeks, RSF personnel infiltrated into residential areas, Texas Alhara Aloula, Karari, Hai Alwadi and Mousia Neighbourhoods, very populated areas with civilians, and from there they have started heavy shelling towards the central commands of the army. Heavy shelling and intense fighting from 12th to 19th August 2023 have lead to hundreds of civilians killed and injured and thousands fled their houses seeking refuge in the outskirts of the city (20 thousands over two days and another 30 thousands 3 days after), particularly west and south of the Nyala. The city is completely paralysed. The US state Department issued a press statement on 17th August 2023 mentioning that “The United States calls on the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to cease renewed fighting in Nyala, South Darfur, and other populated areas, which have caused death and destruction. We are particularly alarmed by reports of indiscriminate shelling carried out by both the RSF and SAF that have caused civilian casualties. Civilians should not pay the ultimate price for the warring parties’ unconscionable actions. Both sides must comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, including those regarding the protection of civilians“ (ref. 1). It is important to emphasise that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out killings of civilians who are still remaining at the homes, among the victims Mr. Ahmed Abaker Bargo Abdelraham, who was killed at his house by the RSF, in a scenario identical to that executed in Elgeneina by the RSF against the local population of the city; with the aim to implementing forced displacement and demographic changes in the region; all of which are war crimes.

The food security situation is critical, with over 70% of the population facing food shortages.

The lack of access to healthcare is also a major problem, in addition to the exit of aid workers from Nyala due to the lack of security. The city’s main market has been looted and damaged. The Hospital are facing a huge pressure with a huge influx of critically injured plus other patients coming in for treatment with the lack of medical supplies and shortage of staff. The internally displaced people have no belongings, only the close they were wearing as they fled their areas. With the rainy season, this dire conditions if not addresses would lead to a sharp increase in preventable diseases, such as malaria and cholera. One of the problems that the residents of the city face is the loss of communication with those inside and outside it; this is the same scenario that Elgeneina faced, which then led to one of the most violent waves of war crimes in the region.

Darfur Union emphasise that the security situation is so bad that people are afraid to leave their homes in other neighbourhoods.

يقول شهود عيان إن الوضع داخل مدينة نيالا هو الأسوأ منذ بدء الصراع في عام 2003. ويقطن في المدينة أكثر من مليون نسمة (المرجع 0)، نزح الالاف منهم من منازلهم بسبب العنف الذي بدأ بعد اندلاع الحرب. الحرب في الخرطوم التي بدات يوم 15 أبريل 2023 بين قوات الدعم السريع (RSF) وقوات المسلحة السودانية (SAF). منذ ذلك الحين امتد القتال إلى مدن أخرى. نيالا هي أحدث مدينة في دارفور تعاني من كارثة القصف بين الطرفين ، حيث اضحى سكان المدينة ضحايا الاشتباك المكثف. تسلل عناصر قوات الدعم السريع خلال الأسابيع القليلة الماضية إلى مناطق سكنية ، تكساس الحارة الأولى ، كرري ، حي الوادي وموسية ، وكلها مناطق مكتظة بالسكان بالمدنيين ، ومن هناك بدأوا قصفًا عنيفًا تجاه القيادة المركزية للجيش. أدى القصف العنيف والقتال من 12 إلى 19 أغسطس 2023 إلى مقتل وجرح مئات المدنيين وفر الآلاف من منازلهم بحثًا عن ملاذ في ضواحي المدينة (20 ألفًا على مدار يومين و30 الفاً بعدها بثلاثة ايام) ، ولا سيما غرب وجنوب نيالا. المدينة مشلولة تماما. أصدرت وزارة الخارجية الأمريكية بيانًا صحفيًا في 17 أغسطس 2023 ذكرت فيه أن “الولايات المتحدة تدعو القوات المسلحة السودانية وقوات الدعم السريع إلى وقف تجدد القتال في نيالا وجنوب دارفور وفي مناطق مأهولة أخرى، وقد تسبب ذلك في الموت والدمار. نحن قلقون بشكل خاص من التقارير التي تتحدث عن القصف العشوائي الذي نفذته كل من قوات الدعم السريع والقوات المسلحة السودانية والذي تسبب في وقوع إصابات في صفوف المدنيين. يجب ألا يدفع المدنيون الثمن النهائي للأعمال غير المعقولة للأطراف المتحاربة. يجب على كلا الجانبين الامتثال لالتزاماتهما بموجب القانون الإنساني الدولي ، بما في ذلك تلك المتعلقة بحماية المدنيين “(المرجع 1). من المهم بمكان ان نؤكد ان قوات الدعم السريع اقدمت على عمليات قتل للمدنيين الذين ما زالوا باقين في منازلهم، نذكر منهم الاستاذ أحمد أبكر برقر عبدالرحمن الذي تم اغتياله في منزله (المرجع #)، في سيناريو مطابق لما تم من جرائم حرب ضد المواطنين العُزَّل في مدينة الجنينة.

يعتبر وضع الأمن الغذائي حرجًا ، حيث يواجه أكثر من 70٪ من السكان نقصًا في الغذاء.

يعد نقص الوصول إلى الرعاية الصحية مشكلة كبيرة أيضًا، علاوة على خروج موظفي الاغاثة من نيالا لعدم توفر الأمن. وفي ذات السياق تعرض سوق المدينة الرئيسي للنهب والتلف من قبل قوات الدعم السريع ومليشيا الجنجويد الموالية لها مما أثر بشكل كبير في تجفيف موارد المدينة. وفي الجانب الصحي، تواجه المستشفيات ضغوطاً مهولةً مع تدفق أعداد كبيرة من المصابين بجروح خطيرة بالإضافة إلى مرضى آخرين يأتون للعلاج؛ ايضاً ادى الوضع الامنى المتدهور الى انقطاع الإمدادات الطبية القادمة من خارج المدينة علاوةً على نقص في الكادر الصحي والذي اصبح جزء كبير منه في عداد النازحين. فر النازحون دون اي من مقتنياتهم للنجاة من الموت المحقق ، فقط الملابس التي كانوا يرتدونها أثناء الخروج من مناطقهم. من المهم ذكر ان مع موسم الأمطار ، ستؤدي هذه الظروف السيئة ، إن لم تعالج ، إلى زيادة حادة في الأمراض التي يمكن الوقاية منها ، الملاريا والكوليرا على سبيل المثال. احدى المهدات التي يواجِهُها سكان المدينة هي انقطاع الاتصال مع من بداخلها وخارجها، وهو نفس السيناريو الذي واجهته الجنينة وادى بعدها الى احد اعنف موجات جرائم الحرب في الاقليم.

The latest report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) entitled “Darfur: Rapid Support Forces, Allied Militias Rape Dozens” (ref. 1) highlights the use of rape as a weapon in Darfur against the civilians. The report documents the systematic use of rape by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allied militias against women and girls in West Darfur. These rapes are not isolated incidents, but rather part of a deliberate pattern of violence aimed at terrorising and displacing the civilian population. The RSF and their Janjaweed allied militia raped several dozen women and girls in West Darfur’s capital and those fleeing fighting in recent weeks (ref. 1).

HRW mentioned that “In late July, Human Rights Watch interviewed in person in Chad nine women and a 15-year-old girl from El Geneina who are survivors of rape and other forms of sexual violence. Four, including the girl, were raped by multiple men. Human Rights Watch also interviewed four women who witnessed sexual violence or the immediate aftermath, along with five service providers, including medical workers who had supported sexual violence victims in Elgeneina. Based on survivors’ personal experiences and incidents they also witnessed, as well as information shared with service providers, including locations where the incidents occurred, Human Rights Watch documented 78 victims, or survivors, of rape between April 24 and June 26” (ref. 1).

التقرير الأخير الصادر عن هيومن رايتس ووتش بعنوان “دارفور: قوات الدعم السريع والمليشيات المتحالفة تغتصب العشرات من النساء” (المرجع 1) يسلط الضوء على استخدام الاغتصاب كسلاح في دارفور ضد المدنيين. يوثق التقرير الاستخدام المنهجي للاغتصاب من قبل قوات الدعم السريع والمليشيات المتحالفة معها ضد النساء والفتيات في غرب دارفور. وتعد عمليات الاغتصاب هذه ليست حوادث فردية ، بل هي جزء من نمط متعمد من العنف يهدف إلى ترويع السكان المدنيين وتشريدهم. قامت قوات الدعم السريع ومليشيا الجنجويد المتحالفة معهم باغتصاب عشرات النساء والفتيات في عاصمة غرب دارفور، الجنينة، وأيضاً أولئك الفارين من القتال في الأسابيع الأخيرة (المرجع 1).

The latest news from Nyala, Sudan is that the situation remains tense and volatile. There have been reports of sporadic clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in recent days, and the city is on high alert. On August 12, 2023, many civilians were killed and others injured as a result of the clashes between the two factions. A resident of the city reported on August 13 that “it is the worst day since the beginning of the recent war” and the situation remains fragile. Two people were reported dead as a result of shelling between RSF and SAF. One name that can be confirmed as a causality is Omer Ali Abdullah Adam. Clashes renewed between the two parties, using heavy weapons, from dawn on Monday, August 14, 2023, to the moment of writing this report. The RSF are concentrated in Texas and Karari neighbourhoods with the aim to enter the SAF central command compounds across the Nyala Wadi. These neighbourhoods belong to local civilians and currently are very populous. It is now being used as a shield. This is resulting in many casualties. Alwihda Hospital, in the southern part of Nyala has received 50 persons, a source from the hospital mentioned that. 2 were reported dead on admission; 33 were treated in the hospital Afor minor injuries; 10 are in critical condition and in need for immediate operations; 5 were transferred to the Turkish hospital in the city to the orthopaedic department.

آخر الأخبار الواردة من مدينة نيالا، جنوب دارفور هي أن الوضع لا يزال متوتراً ومتقلباً. وردت تقارير عن اشتباكات متفرقة بين القوات المسلحة السودانية وقوات الدعم السريع في الأيام الأخيرة ، والمدينة في حالة تأهب قصوى. في 12 أغسطس 2023 ، قتل عدد كبير من المدنيين وأصيب آخرون جراء الاشتباكات بين الفصيلين. أفاد أحد سكان المدينة في 13 أغسطس أن “هذا هو أسوء يوم منذ بداية الحرب الأخيرة” وأن الوضع لا يزال هشًا. وردت أنباء عن مقتل شخصين نتيجة القصف بين قوات الدعم السريع والقوات المسلحة السودانية. أحد الأسماء التي يمكن تأكيدها الشهيد عمر علي عبد الله آدم. وتجددت الاشتباكات بين الطرفين باستخدام الاسلحة الثقيلة منذ فجر يوم الاثنين 14 اغسطس 2023 حتى لحظة كتابة هذا التقرير. ترتكز قوات الدعم السريع في الاونة الأخيرة في تكساس وحي كرري وذلك بهدف الوصول عبر الوادي والتسلل الى مركز قيادة الجيش. من المهم ان نشير ان هذه المناطق سكنية وتكتظ بالمدنيين وتم الدخول اليها من قبل الدعم السريع لكي يستخدم السكان كدروع بشرية. وقد أدى هذا إلى وقوع العديد من الضحايا. واستقبل مستشفى الوحدة جنوب نيالا 50 شخصا ، وذلك حسب مصدر من داخل المستشفى. تم الإبلاغ عن قتيلين ؛ 33 جريح ممن دخلوا المستشفى ويتم علاجهم في قسم الطوارئ ويعانون من اصابات طفيفة؛ 10 جرحى في حالة حرجة وبحاجة إلى عمليات فورية ؛ تم نقل 5 أشخاص إلى المستشفى التركي – قسم العظام.
