Darfur Union In the UK -Commemoration of the 7th anniversary of Bashir Indictment by International Criminal Court (ICC)

Darfur Union In the UK – Commemoration of the 7th anniversary of Bashir Indictment by International Criminal Court (ICC)

London, 3pm, Sunday, 6th of March 2016,
In memory of the victims of :
Genocide in Darfur and beyond,

Enforced displacement

Deprivation

Demographic changes in the Province

Darfur Union in the United Kingdom, friends of Darfur, Civil society groups and NGOs, have come together with a plan to commemorate a very important day to all advocate of justice around the globe.

The 4th of March, represent an important date for the people in Sudan in general, and those in Darfur in particular. It marks the beginning of long lost justice. A quick run down the memory lane unfold that famous press conference in La Hague, 7 years ago, where Luis Ocampo, the former general prosecutor of the ICC, announced that his team have enough evidence to prosecute Omer Bashir, the sitting president of Sudan, for crimes committed under his commands, that counts for the following:

5 counts for crimes against humanity

2 counts of war crimes

3 counts of genocide

The gathering of evidence of above mentioned crimes were concluded by the 12th of July 2010, under the statue of Rome. Two warrants of arrest issued by the Pre Trial Chamber are out there, and the perpetrator (Bashir) is at large.

Since then, several light attempts were put in place to arrest Bashir, in Kenya, Nigeria and the last one was in South Africa, June 2015. During Bashir visit to participate in AU summit, an interim order was made by the high court in Pretoria, barring President Bashir from leaving South Africa, after civil organisations called for his arrest on the basis of an ICC warrant. Bashir managed to escape after the executive bodies failed to conduct the judiciary orders. This came as an embarrassment to SA government, and as a huge disappointment to the people of Sudan in Darfur, and justice advocates around the world. Nonetheless, the ICC prosecution case against Bashir has proved to be a source of uncomfort to the perpetrator and his government, and it is a source of inspiration for the people of the region. Since the indictment, Bashir and his militias have waged a viscous war in Darfur, and also extended their genocidal plans to the regions of Nuba Mountains and Blue Niles.

Darfur Union in the United Kingdom invites all of you, to commemorate the date, to bring awareness to the issue, and try to find ways to reignite the just case of the people of Sudan in all platforms.

Three main papers/ presentations will be delivered:-

1) Bashir Genocide in Darfur, and later on in Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile.
2) The 7th anniversary of Bashir Indictment by ICC, the history of the case, and where is it now.
3) The 13th anniversary of Bashir War against the people of Sudan in Darfur, the history of the conflict and its implications on the people there.
When: 3 PM, Sunday, 6th March 2016

Darfur Union in the UK Stands on the Proposed €100 million Grant to Sudan to Tackle Migration

Darfur Union in the UK Stands on the Proposed €100 million Grant to Sudan to Tackle Migration

News have surfaced over the last few days that the African Union will be pledging 1.8 billion euros (granted by the European Union and International Community) to tackle the migration crisis, mainly from Africa to Europe. 100 million euros will be directed to Sudan to implement policies and projects that will help limit the flow of migrants from/ travelling through the country. The initiatives failed to acknowledge the root cause for migration in Africa in general and in Sudan to be specific. The latter has been waging war against its people over the last year two decades. In 2008, Sudan had 6 million internally displaced people, which was the world record for that year.

Coming forward to today, millions of Sudanese are living in desperate situations in refugee and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, hoping and praying in all their different languages for a save refuge.

The world occasionally tunes in to the daily atrocities taking place across Sudan: aerial bombardment, displacement and rape which are concentrated in three main areas, Darfur, the Nuba Mountains and in Blue Nile State. Victims have become numerical figures, the lucky ones are recorded in dusty books, others are not listed at all, the recording pens having dried out. Also, let’s not forget the masses of young men and women who cry out “we have had enough of killing, injustice, insecurity, harassment, corruption and unemployment” only to face a death sentence for doing so at the hands of the Regime.

At this critical time thousands of Sudanese diaspora are scattered around the globe, and many more are seeking way out to escape the aforementioned destinies.

In conclusion, the proposed funding, which is in its way to Sudan is highly likely going to be used directly on indirectly to finance the war waged against the innocent population.

Furthermore, the government of Sudan has no control over the country’s borders because of the war it wages in three regions. As a result, Sudan has became a sieve for all passers by, and any talks of real statistics of how many persons travelling/ crossing through the country is far away from accurate, and it’s a wrong guesstimate at best.

Only recently, as of the 9th of February 2016, “The U.N. Security Council extended for one year a panel of experts monitoring violations of the UN arms embargo in Darfur” ref. http://goo.gl/W5vWLh

This action was a direct result of the Sudan government escalation of violence in Darfur region. Therefore, the track record of current government does suggest that the the money should be upheld as it will only results in more and more people migrating to flee the horror of war to seek safer refuge for themselves and their loved ones.

Please refer to links below to our recent reports from the ground with regards to the heinous crime committed against our people (ref. http://wp.me/p77ak4-5q). As of the 17th of February 2016, UN OCHA have reported up to 73000 civilians fleeing the violence in Western Darfur.

We plea to the European Union to reconsider their proposed plans, and to halt the payment of the proposed grant to the government of Sudan, which will end contributing to the displacement of the innocent people of Sudan.

Osama Mahmoud

Dispatches: Inaction on Darfur, Again

Dispatches: Inaction on Darfur, Again

By Jehanne Henry for HRW

Last month, Sudanese government forces launched another offensive in Darfur’s Jebel Mara, a mountainous rebel stronghold with an estimated population of more than 100,000 people. By all accounts, the government forces went on a rampage: aerial and ground attacks have reportedly destroyed 47 villages and killed dozens of civilians since January 15, 2016. The United Nations estimates at least 73,000 people have fled their homes. As in the past, Sudan has blocked access to the area by humanitarian agencies and peacekeepers.

Darfur Union in the United Kingdom – February Report on Atrocities Committed against the Sudan People in Darfur

Darfur Union in the United Kingdom – February Report on Atrocities Committed against the Sudan People in Darfur
A summary of Bashir crimes and atrocities in Jabel Mara Mount, Golo, Rokoro, El-Geneina and Khartoum
As we are approaching the 7th anniversary Bashir indictment by the International Criminal Court ICC for committing crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur ( for detail refer to ICC case ICC-OTP-20080714-PR341), Darfur Union in the United Kingdom has opted to provided regular, monthly reports, reflecting the hostilities, crimes and atrocities committed by against the people of Sudan in Darfur in Darfur province and also against the Students in various universities across Sudan.

Here is the February report summarising the latest from the grounds – Jabel Mara Mount, Golo, Rokoro, El-Geneina and Khartoum.

a) University of El-Geneina, in West Darfur has been under the spotlight of the pro government militias since the the city’s massacre back in mid January 2016 (ref. http://wp.me/p77ak4-1G). The students there are vocal and have been advocates of freedom since the government war on Darfur began 13 years ago. Two weeks ago, the pro government militias entered the university main square to disperse a peaceful forum held by the students union. As a result, the militias detained a number of students and one of the detainees was Salah Eldin Gamar, who was tortured to death between the 31 of January – 01 of February (see our full report on http://wp.me/p77ak4-4S). Below is the list of detainees:-
1) Jedda Ishag Ateem

2) Abdelhakeem Mubarak Elkheer

3) Osman Saleh Idrees

4) Alfadil Habib Yousif

5) Abdelmoniem Hassan Yasin

6) Mudathir Osman Ibrahim

7) Moawia Ibrahim

8) Samia AbdelNabi

9) Wathba Hassan

10) Abdel Allah Atif Tabaja

11) Salah Mohammed Ateem

12) Alamin Yousif

13) Abubaker Adam Abdel Allah

14) Altayeb Mohammed Arbab

15) Ahmed Jumma Hassan

16) Abdelmajid Haroun
b) The targeting of Darfuri students across Sudan. For the second time in a month the NISS personnels have targeted female students (Faculty of Education, University of Khartoum) at their dorm. The militias have thrown the students belongs, and subjected them to harassment and racist/ verbal abuse. The incident happened on the 27th of January 2016.

c) Gruesome reality on the ground. Bashir Air Force has caused havoc in West Darfur. The areas of Jabel Marra, Golo and Rokoro have been under bombardment for more than two weeks, causing a mass displacement of people to the eastern side of the state. According to the latest UN figures, more than 34000 persons fled the areas and now trapped in valleys and mountains, where made it very difficult for aid agencies to reach the vulnerable (as of the 8th of February).

d) In preparation for the government so called Darfur referendum (ref. http://wp.me/p77ak4-2o) , and part of regime plans to dismantle IDP camps, a mini camp known as Aswad, resides in the eastern side of the town of Taweela. The camp was cleared from its residents and the people there were forced to flee and seek refuge in Rwanda IDP camp in Taweela, North Darfur. 28 January 2016.

e) Assassination of a young man by the ruthless pro government militia known as the Rapid Speed Force. The crime took place in El-Mawashi market, El-Fashir, North Darfur, 08 February 2016. Its nature is a reoccurring one. The militia confronted the young man, Abdelaziz Hamid Nour, and asked him to hand his car keys. Abdelaziz refused and moments later he was killed in the busy market.

The situation on the ground is unstable and may escalate to more forced displacement.

Darfur Union in the United Kingdom call upon the international community to put pressure on the Sudan government to stop targeting the civilian population of Darfur. Also to allow the humanitarian organisations to have full access treat the wounded, and provide aid to the displaced people. We call upon the UNAMID forces on he ground to protect the civilians, and to perform their duties with dignity and professionalism by reported incidents taking place across the Darfur, to execute the Mandate the is allowing them to function within the countries. The Union in the United Kingdom takes this chance to plea to the UK government to raise the issue in the United Nation by calling for an urgent meeting to provide protection to the civilians in the effected areas in Darfur.

We will continue providing regular updates about the current situation and other that may take place in Darfur. A copy of this report will be sent to the following:
1) Office of International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda,

2) The Sudans department, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office

3) United Nation, UNAMID Central Press Office, Kenya

4) Office of Secretary General, United Nation

5) Office of Secretary General, African Unisn

6) Department of the Sudans, US State Department.
