DARFUR Union in the UK: Chilling Accounts by Dr. Eithar Khalil, a Volunteer Medical Doctor in Adré, Chad Highlighting the Dire Situation of the Refugees on the Ground

“*and adds: thousands will continue to flee Elgeneina and other localities into Chad as a direct result of RSF/ Janjaweed War Crimes campaign in West Darfur*”

As the suffering of the people of Sudan Continues, particularly in Darfur where war crimes are being committed by the Janjaweed/ Rapid Support Forces (RSF), against the civilian population, particularly in Elgeneina, Morni, Tawila, Zalingei, Kutum to name a few places. In Elgeneina, war crimes and ethnic cleansing carried out by RSF/ Janjaweed resulted in an estimated 5000-8000 persons killed including children and thousands forced to flee the city and cross the border to Adré, Chad (ref. 1). The neighbouring country has open its boarder and welcomed the refugees. The local efforts by Chad, people and government were loudly praised and were regarded as generous, nonetheless, the situation and scale of the issue requires international intervention to rescue the dire humanitarian conditions. So far, the response to the enormity of the situation by the international community has been very slow (ref. 2).

Volunteers have started to arrive Eastern part of Chad, to Adré, with the aim to support the victims of Janjaweed atrocities. Sudanese Doctors Initiative in Chad is one of the groups that are working on the grounds closely with the Beri Bour Dugo Donga Association to help provide their services to the refugees. One of the volunteers who managed to make it to Adré, is Dr. Eithar Khalil, a medical doctor, currently offering her time to serve her fellow Sudanese at the newly formed refugees camps in and surrounding Adré.

The following are direct accounts describing the situation on the group:-

“What one learned from the testimonies of the refugees is that this time the killing was selective, people of education, known community influencers and medical doctors, those were selected to be killed; any girl and women from the age of 13 to 50 were selected to be raped, ti.e. because there were classified “women of childbearing age”, then killed. As for the males, they should be killed even if it was a newborn of one day old. These are full-fledged crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide. So what are we doing?!” (Ref. 3, 7th July 2023, Adré, Chad).

Dr. Eithar Khalil

On another post Dr. Eithar shared a couple of photos from Adré on her FB account from the inside of a couple of tents hosting wounded refugees. She wrote “These are just two of the 22 tents that are used to deal with bullets and RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) casualties in Camp Adré. Janjaweed _ Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is a terrorist organisation” (Ref. 4, 7th July 2023, Adré, Chad).

Dr. Eithar Khalil

One more account and appeal by Dr. Eithar, she wrote “I call upon you all to provide help and support to Adré refugees camp, for its people are in the worst human condition, and the numbers are still pouring in, in thousands everyday, fleeing from the hell of the Janjaweed” (ref. 5, 7th July 2023, Adré, Chad).

Dr. Either Khalil

The photos accompanying this report are taken from Dr. Eithar’s FB page as well as from the Sudanese Doctors Initiative in Chad FB page (ref. *); the photos were used to highlight the refugees crisis in Eastern Chad as an outcome of the atrocities committed against the people of Sudan in Darfur.

The individual efforts by Dr. Eithar, Dr. Ashraf Jabsenda and the rest of the volunteers in and around Adré are much appreciated and must be followed by others, as action taken to serve people and to save their lives counts.

DARFUR Union in the UK reiterates that there are a number of actions that needs to be taken with immediate effect to help cater for the victims of this catastrophic situation:-

* Provide immediate humanitarian aid to the people of Darfur, by securing safe passages of aid from Port Sudan to the affected areas, including food, water, shelter, medicine and other humanitarian supplies. Some the routes regarding the Humanitarian supplied, shorter routes for supplies to reach refugees in Adré can be accessible via the Cameroon-Chad via the Port of Douala.

* To put pressure the leadership of the Rapid Support Forces and its affiliated Janjaweed branches to stop the violence and allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need. This will help in terms of humanitarian organisations to collect real data on the death toll and also help in burying the bodies that are scattered on the ground in Elgeneina and other cities such as Kutum (ref. 6) and Zalingei (ref. 7).

* Establish safe zones in Darfur where civilians can be protected from the Janjaweed militias. This can only happen by empowering existing peace forces and providing them with a clear Mandate.

* Reactivation of Chapter 7 with respect to DARFUR. The UN Security Council needs to act immediately to do so to stop the war crimes and crimes against humanity that we are seen before the world eyes. Everyday a testimony is given from the survivors of the ethnic cleansing whom managed to escape Elgeneina. Mass killing, bodies left on streets. The Janjaweed and their partners are clear about their plan regarding DARFUR, secure DARFUR by creating havoc and mass atrocities, force displacement and demographic changes.

* Protect those IDPs and new waves of displace people that are shelterless at this very moment in DARFUR.

DARFUR Union in the UK warns that failure to take immediate actions regarding the situation in Darfur, will lead to series of further killing and human rights violations (ref. 8), refugees and IDPs crisis, and a nonreversible human catastrophe.

The juntas, Janjaweed and their allies from the political parties in the centre have caused this war, and the people of Sudan in the city of Elgeneina and other cities are suffering the outcome because of the political greed that justifies the means of achieving their ultimate goal of gaining absolute power, reminiscence of Omar al-Bashir Regime (ref. 9).

It is necessary to give nominal mention to volunteers of the Sudanese Doctors Initiative in Chad, and we apology to those we were unable to mention in this report as those were names available to us.
